'NCIS': The One Character Fans Couldn't Stand to Ever Lose

Since 2003 NCIS fans have been watching the Naval Criminal Investigative Service uncover and solve crimes. The hit CBS show is in its 17th season, and while many characters have come and gone, some have been around from the start.

For die-hard fans, the show’s staying power comes down to three main characters, whether you love them or hate them. Gibbs, DiNozzo, and McGee who have been around from the start and the show wouldn’t be the same without them. In fact, one of these three characters is the one that fans can’t even stand to lose.

A 2019 reddit post asked who is the best and worst characters on NCIS. Which one fans would be fine with losing and which one they absolutely love and could never lose. We combed through the forum’s thread to bring you the 411.

Why fans love ‘NCIS’

With some of the most loyal viewers on TV, NCIS has seen consistent ratings. The fans enjoy watching the show because it is different from other crime dramas. That’s saying something considering how many crime shows there are on television now. The rules and laws they have to follow are a little different, too, which keeps fans coming back for more.

According to Popculture, “NCIS has been a global juggernaut for almost two decades. Its viewers are clearly the most loyal of any drama on television. They are passionate about the characters, the plot lines, and the storytelling.” Said Kelly Kahl, from CBS.

Another reason the show is a hit is their attention to detail. The writers and actors take steps to ensure they produce authentic work. This means they work with and learn from real NCIS agents. This hits a chord for fans that have a military background, and those in law enforcement.

Fans like this character the least

Surprisingly many people have a problem with the character Timothy McGee, played by Sean Murray. He has been around from the first season, but there are a couple of things that fans have complained about.

First, some fans have mentioned that he whimpers too much. It sounds like some people think that he is not tough enough to be part of the team. Even those that do have a problem with him have to admit he rounds out the group.

Another issue that came up was all the time he spent being tortured. Although a couple of fans spoke about this part of McGee’s past, it’s not really the characters fault. It was written into his life. Maybe their issue was in how McGee handled it. It wasn’t like he asked to be taken and tortured for months.

The one character fans couldn’t stand to ever lose

When it comes to the one character fans couldn’t stand to lose, Gibbs wins hands down. You can’t even have a conversation about NCIS without bringing him up. Here’s why he is a favorite for fans.

He has been the star from the very first episode. There have been 379 episodes and Mark Harmon, who plays Leroy Jethro Gibbs, has starred in each one. He is a favorite because fans never had a chance to forget him.

Another reason is the fact that he keeps the whole group together. Think of Gibbs as glue. Without him, the storyline would crumble.

In response to who the best NCIS character is, a reddit user said, “Gibbs. He’s changed (at least a little). I don’t know if the show could have survived long if Harmon got tired of doing the character.”

We couldn’t agree more. If at any point during the last 17 seasons, Mark Harmon had decided to walk away from Gibbs, the fans would have followed. He is the main character and reason NCIS fans tune in every week.
