Medical examiner Dr Jimmy Palmer has been a mainstay on NCIS since he joined the cast near the end of the first season. With CBS unsure when the series will return amid the outbreak of coronavirus, some fans are hoping Palmer’s absent wife will make her return to the show.

The seventh season of popular crime procedural NCIS was cut short by four episodes following the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

Long-term viewers have been enthralled by the latest developments, including the surprise return of fan favourite Ziva David (played by Cote de Pablo).

The story is hoped to continue soon, with CBS suggesting production could potentially resume sometime in September.

In the meantime, speculation for how the series will continue is at an all time high in the midst of what could become the longest hiatus the series has ever experienced.

During the unexpected break, fans have been calling for the return of more popular characters after Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and the team were reunited with Agent Ziva David.

One character in particular some viewers believe has been short-changed is the NCIS team’s long-standing medical examiner Dr Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen).

Jimmy originally joined the series at the end of the first season as an assistant to the Chief Medical Examiner at the time, Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard (David McCallum).

Ducky has since stepped down from the position, but still provides crucial insight for certain cases as the NCIS’ resident historian.

Meanwhile, Dr Jimmy Palmer has become a series regular and was promoted to Ducky’s position in 2019.

Despite remaining a crucial member of the cast for the last 17 seasons of NCIS, some viewers have been confused by the lack of Jimmy’s personal life being explored by the series.

In season seven, audiences were introduced to mortician Breena (Michelle Pierce), Jimmy’s girlfriend and later wife.

Although Breena became a fan favourite recurring character in the series, Jimmy’s wife hasn’t made an appearance since the 12th season back in 2015.

That’s almost five whole seasons fans haven’t caught a glimpse of Jimmy’s home life away from the NCIS labs.

Although Breena star Michelle Pierce has made small appearances in major films like Transformers, her schedule is relatively clear as NCIS remains her most recent TV credit.

In the midst of a major break for the action drama, some fans of the series have made the case for the former recurring character to return during the break in the series.

Over on TVInsider, one viewer said: “It’s been much too long since we’ve caught up with Dr. Jimmy Palmer’s personal life.

“We’ve seen the medical examiner’s father-in-law (Larry Miller) more recently (season 16) than we’ve seen his wife (season 12)!”

Although comedian Larry Miller has only appeared in two episodes of the series as Ed Slater, most viewers would agree it’s rather strange the series decided to prioritise Jimmy’s father-in-law over his actual wife.

Now the series has taken such a long break, it’s hope the writers have used the opportunity to flesh out the drama and side stories.

Hopefully, Jimmy Palmer can enjoy some well-earned downtime with Breena at some point in the highly anticipated 18th season.

NCIS season 17 is available to stream on CBS All Access.
