Mr Robot season 4: Release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Warning: Contains spoilers for Mr Robot season 3.

Mr Robot rebounded from a misfiring second season in style with an excellent season 3, leaving us eagerly anticipating season 4.

USA Network officially renewed Sam Esmail’s hacker drama just before the third season finale aired, with Esmail later taking to Instagram to reveal that writing had already begun for the new episodes.

Christian Slater has indicated that season 4 could bring Mr Robot to a close, though his co-star Rami Malek has suggested that there’s still scope for a fifth run.

Is this the end? And if so, how will the final episodes play out? Here’s everything we know so far.

Mr Robot season 4 release date: When can we expect it?

There was no official release date in the renewal news, but while the first two seasons landed in the summers of 2015 and 2016, season three was pushed back to October 2017 – so October 2018 is probably the best shout.

The good news is that we imagine UK audiences will still get to see the new episodes only a day after their airing in the US, thanks to Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Mr Robot season 4 cast: Who’s coming back?

Quite simply, it wouldn’t be Mr Robot without Rami Malek and Christian Slater as Elliot Alderson and his dead father/alternate persona respectively, so they’re guaranteed.

Season three did however knock off some significant characters, namely Tyrell’s wife Joanna Wellick (Stephanie Corneliussen) and Elliot’s fsociety co-members Trenton (Sunita Mani) and Mobley (Azhar Khan), so the only way they’re coming back is if season four uses any flashback sequences.

The other major players all survived season three, so expect to see Elliot’s sister Darlene (Carly Chaikin), Elliot’s childhood friend Angela Moss (Portia Doubleday), Tyrell (Martin Wallström), E Corp CEO Phillip Price (Michael Cristofer), Dark Army leader White Rose (BD Wong) and FBI agent Dom DiPierro (Grace Gummer).

Season three’s post-credits scene also saw the return of season one character Fernando Vera (Elliot Villar) who brutally murdered Elliot’s girlfriend Shayla, so he’ll play a role in the next season. “We’ll definitely explore the blowback from all of that with her murder and how Elliot assisted in breaking Vera out of prison,” teased Esmail to Deadline.

Less clear is whether we’ll be seeing menacing Dark Army stooge Irving (Bobby Cannavale) again after he killed FBI agent Santiago (Omar Metwally) in the season three finale, but Esmail is hopeful. “If there’s any opportunity to work with him again, I’ll do that,” he said of Cannavale.

Mr Robot season 4 plot: How did season 3 set it up?

The main arc of season three was whether or not Elliot could undo the 5/9 hack and the damage on E Corp’s data, with the finale making it seem like he was successful despite all the Dark Army’s attempts. Esmail has always spoken about a five-season run for Mr Robot, with season three acting as the end of act two if the show was a movie – and it seems that is still the plan.

“The plan was that basically toward the end of act two, he would reverse what he did, but still kind of be in a position of now pivoting and targeting the real top one percent that orchestrated the 5/9 hack behind his back,” he told EW.

It looked like Elliot and Darlene would be killed by the Dark Army’s hitman Leon (Joey Bada$$), before White Rose changed her mind and murdered her lover Grant instead, sparing Elliot and Darlene, potentially to keep them doing the Dark Army’s bidding. But with the Dark Army now firmly in Elliot’s sights, will that turn out to be the right move?

White Rose probably has more than one enemy to worry about. Angela was so convinced she was doing the right thing with Stage Two, until the Dark Army pulled their devastating move of blowing up 71 E Corp buildings, killing thousands. As if that wasn’t enough, the season three finale saw Angela discover that E Corp CEO – and her boss – Phillip Price was actually her father, so season four will likely see them team up to take down White Rose.

Not that the Dark Army doesn’t have moves of its own to make with Dom potentially being forced to be their new FBI inside man after the death of Santiago. “Dom is at a crossroads. She’s the most noble character to her cause in the entire series. She’s now in with the Dark Army in this brutal way and we’re going to see the aftereffects of that,” Esmail told Deadline.
