In shocking scenes Caden, played by Billy Howle, tries to end his own life while still recovering in hospital and starts pulling off his scalp.
His mum Katheryn (Helen McCrory) watches the horrifying moment, which viewers sickened.
Discussing the moment, one person wrote: “Fourteen minutes gone since it ended and I'm still seated on the sofa like a demented person repeating "what the absolute f**k" #MotherFatherSon.”
A second tweeted: “I know #MotherFatherSon is pretty out there (I actually gasped out loud at the scalp-ripping/attempted breastfeeding scene) but I have to say – it’s compelling stuff. The main cast are all just incredible.”
While a third remarked: “Thankfully my 16 year old daughter didn’t watch with us tonight #MotherFatherSon You meant it when you said ‘With scenes some viewers might find disturbing’ @BBCTwo !!”
The BBC2 show stars Richard Gere as Max, a US media mogul who has the ear of both the British prime minister and the leader of the opposition (who's played by Sarah Lancashire).
Max's son Caden heads up British broadsheet The National Reporter, but struggles with life in his father's shadow.
Helen McCrory is Max's ex-wife and Caden's mum Kathryn, who has a strained relationship with her son and spends her days volunteering at a shelter.
The first episode of the eight part drama was equally as shocking and saw a graphic pre-watershed sex scene.
Caden invited a prostitute back to his flat for sex and told her: "Pretend you know nothing about sex, about your body or mine."
He then stood completely in the buff and proceeded to partake in a very bizarre sex scene.
