'Modern Family' Is Officially Ending! Here Are 5 Spinoffs We'd Love To See

Prepare to bid adieu to the Dunphys, Pritchetts, Tuckers, and Delgados. ABC recently announced Modern Family was renewed for its 11th installment — which, unfortunately, will also be its last.

The series has cemented itself as one of the funniest, most inventive sitcoms on television. In its decade-long run, Modern Family has amassed a whopping 22 Emmy awards and 75 nominations. It will also go down in history as ABC’s longest-running comedy series.

“[Co-creators Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan] have created one of the most seminal and iconic comedies in television history,” Karey Burke, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement. “In its final season, there will be more milestone events that anyone who has been a fan of the series won’t want to miss.”

Even though it’s the end of the series (and an era), the network isn’t closing its doors on a possible spinoff. There’s still a chance Modern Family 2.0 is on the horizon.

“I would love it. No one would be happier if there were [a spin-off],” Burke told the press at the 2019 Television Critics Association Press Tour. “This next year, from what I hear, is all about… they have big plans. There are some surprises and big milestones coming. They intend to really, really go out big. So, it would be terrific if a spin-off were part of that.”

It’s hard to imagine the entertainment circuit without the Dunphys, and we doubt they’ll be gone forever.

So while plans are cooking inside Lloyd and Levitan’s writers’ room, we’re speaking our spinoff ideas into existence.

1. Phil Dunphy running his real estate business (and/or pursuing his magic career)

Talks of a spinoff date back to 2013 when showrunners revealed they planned to make a show about Gil Thorpe (played by the inimitable Rob Riggle), Phil Dunphy’s archnemesis. I’d pay to watch a show about Phil and Gil just duking it out for real estate supremacy, sabotaging each other’s open houses, trashing one another’s bench advertisements, and doing all sorts of loony pranks. I’d also sacrifice my arm (and a leg) to watch Phil pursue his magic career — maybe even head to Vegas, since the kids are all grown up. Heck, I’d watch Phil spew his Phil’s-o-sophies for a whole 20 minutes. JUST GIVE US MORE PHIL DUNPHY.

2. All eyes on Haley

Haley was never the brightest of the bunch (sometimes we thought all hope was lost for the eldest kid in the Dunphy gang) but she’s redeemed herself countless times, so we’d love to keep watching her grow. Now that — SPOILER ALERT — she’s pregnant, ABC needs to give us a show about the love pentagon (?) between Haley, Dylan, Andy, Arvin, and Rainier, her approach to motherhood, and her blooming fashion career.

3. The Pritchett family’s early years

Can you imagine Claire and Mitchell as kids? Me neither — which is why we need a whole show about it! How was Jay as a dad? How was Dede as a mom? Were Jay and Dede toxic even back in the day, or was there a point when they didn’t want to tear each other’s throats? What were Claire and Mitch like in high school? We need answers!

4. Gloria and her crazy family

Gloria is a fan favorite, and it’s not hard to see why. But outside of the Pritchetts, she has a huge, crazy family of her own. We know they’re mostly in Colombia, that she stole her sister’s only chance to come to America, that her mother is insufferable, and that she has a good-for-nothing ex-husband. Apart from that, we know nothing else. ABC, give us a Gloria show!

5. Cam, Mitchell, and friends

How could we forget about Cam and Mitchell and their extra special circle of friends? It’s always a treat when Pepper, Ronaldo, Longines, Crispin, and Sal make appearances, and we’d love to see a spinoff based on their friendships. It would be interesting to see a comedic spin on same-sex couples raising families (kind of like The New Normal, but better) as well as the issues that they face.

How about you? Do you have ideas for a Modern Family spinoff? Let us know in the comments!
