Making a Murderer 3: The filmmakers share their thoughts on the next chapter

Making a Murderer may have only just released its second season but, having devoured all ten of the new episodes, we’re already looking ahead to the next series. A friendly word of warning: this article contains spoilers, if you’re yet to finish Part 2.

Thankfully, filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos (who followed the story of Steven Avery from his 2005 arrest) have wasted little time in teasing the possibility of yet another update in the documentary series.

Here’s what we know so far.

Making a Murderer 3: Will there be another series?

Netflix hasn’t made any official announcements yet, but the documentary makers have been very open to the idea.

During a recent chat with Cosmopolitan UK, Ricciardi and Demos said: “Maybe [there could be a third season]… I heard that documentaries come in tens!”

If you’ve finished Part 2, you’ll be aware that the series ends with Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey both still behind bars, serving life sentences for the murder of Teresa Halbach.

However, with each subject still fighting for an appeal, this does leave things open for a possible continuation, particularly if wrongful-conviction attorney Kathleen Zellner does manage to win Avery a retrial, based on the ream of new Making a Murderer evidence that was presented in series two.

Making a Murderer 3 release date: When is it coming?

At the moment, we only have whispers of a third series.

It’s worth remembering that there was an almost three-year gap between Part 1 and Part 2 so, even if it goes ahead, we may be waiting a while.

Making a Murderer 3: What happened next?

As we’ve already covered, Avery and his nephew are (as of time of writing) still in prison.

Following the release of Part 2, Zellner has taken to Twitter to assure fans that there’s still more to be done in Avery’s case. “Steven Avery is at the BEGINNING not end of the appeal process,” she said, before adding that there are still “multiple opportunities to overturn this wrongful conviction”.

And it seems that everyone involved is committed to following events through to the very end.

“It’s hard to imagine what a true end to a story with so many threads and so many people who have gone through so much, would look like,” filmmakers Ricciardi and Demos have also said. “We certainly have deep connections to many people in this story.”

They added: “For us, the questions of continuing past this Part Two will be the same questions that were there when we finished Part One: What is the story that’s taking place at this point? Can we maintain or gain access to it and does it offer something new?

“So we will continue asking those questions.”

Making a Murderer 3 Trailer: When can I see it?

There isn’t one at the moment, but we’ll keep you posted with all MaM announcements as and when.

For now, there’s the official trailer for Part 2.

Making a Murderer Part 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.
