Mahershala Ali looks to the past in first trailer for True Detective season 3

The first trailer for the upcoming third season of True Detective has dropped, and it looks like those reports of the show going back to season one basics are true. Thankfully.

HBO has unveiled its first look at season three of the anthology series, teasing Mahershala Ali’s debut in the Ozarks as police detective Wayne Hays.

In the trailer, we see Wayne attempt to uncover the unsettling story of missing children in southern Missouri, in an investigation that forces him to revisit his past and his own family.

An official synopsis for season three promises another “macabre” story from creator Nic Pizzolatto, “and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods”.

Joining Oscar winner Ali is an equally impressive cast, including the likes of Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, and Scoot McNairy, plus Justice League‘s Ray Fisher and The Crown‘s Jodi Balfour.

The Closer‘s Jon Tenney will also be making an appearance, and he’s been giving fans some promising insight into season three.

Hinting at the tone, Tenny said: “I can’t get into real specifics, but I think it does move a little bit in the direction of season one… a little bit more maybe than season two.

“The scripts are just so compelling. Again, really moving. The company is great. I can’t really say a whole lot, but I’m thrilled to be part of it and I think people are going to really dig it.”

True Detective returns to HBO in January 2019 in the US. Sky Atlantic airs the show in the UK.
