With so many spare hours on our hands over lockdown to watch new TV series, it’s no surprise that streaming giant Netflix is raking in viewers with mega hit shows like Bridgerton and The Queen’s Gambit.

But surprisingly, neither of those popular series have topped the channel’s ratings charts, as French series Lupin has snuck into the number one spot.

The ten part show, which is an adaptation of Maurice LeBlanc’s best-selling novels, is on track to hit 70 million views by 5 February.

And that statistic is all the more impressive considering the programme has only been available for viewers to watch at home for a month.

Meanwhile, both Bridgerton, starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rege-Jean Page, and The Queen’s Gambit, led by actress Anya-Taylor Joy, previously held the record for most popular.

They each brought in over 60 million streams in their first 28 days and have been a hot topic of conversation ever since, regularly trending on social media.

Similarly, Lupin has attracted a lot of attention. But it’s just not us Brits who can’t get enough of Lupin as it’s also performing strongly globally, including in other countries such as Germany, Italy and Spain.

Lupin follows the life of a thief called Assane Diop, who is played by Omar Sy.

Diop’s Senegal immigrant father is stitched up and framed for stealing a diamond necklace from his employer – the extremely wealthy Hubert Pellegrini.

Once he was convicted and sent to prison, Diop’s father hung himself in his cell.

The story picks up years later when Diop makes it his dying mission to get revenge on the Pellegrini family for ruining his and his dad’s life.

And he’ll stop at nothing to settle the score, as fans have seen.

Five of the episodes have already dropped, with a further five coming in the next few weeks.

Celebrating the growing success the show has had so far, leading man Omar posted on his social media account thanking viewers for tuning in.

The 43 year old, who is starring in Jurassic World: Dominion, wrote: "70 millions, that's insane!! So proud that Lupin is the first French Netflix Original series to be so successful internationally! That wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you all!"
