Love Island’s Maura Higgins claims producers tried to get her to dump her boyfriend to go on the show last year – The Sun

LOVE Island’s Maura Higgins has claimed producers tried to get her to dump her boyfriend to go on the show last year.

The former grid girl appeared on the series this summer but revealed she was approached a few times before but the timing had never been right.

Last summer she was in a relationship so turned down a place but producers tried to convince her to give it a go anyway.

Speaking on Girls With Goals on Her.ie she said: “I remember last year when they called me up and I was with my ex – we had been together about six months and I said ‘no I’m in a relationship’.

“They were like ‘how long have you been with that guy’ and I said ‘six months’  and they were like ‘well you don’t really know that that’s going to last’ and they said to me ‘if anything happens closer to the show, let us know and we’ll get you in there’.”

She added:  “My boyfriend wasn’t very happy.”

However this year when they called she was single and decided to give it ago.

Despite entering the series late on she became a huge hit thanks to her openness when it came to talking about sex and funny one-liners.

She went on to have a relationship with Curtis Pritchard after he dumped Amy Hart and the pair are still in a relationship.

Discussing her no nonsense attitude on the show, she said: "A lot of the islanders were shocked with what was coming out of my mouth but I'm used to that.

“I'm used to everyone saying 'Oh My God', but I don't see it as a problem I was brought up in an environment where I can speak about sex and I can speak about anything I wanted to so I've never had to filter anything.

“I still do get surprised when people are in shock by what I say. It's 2019 I think every woman should be able to talk about whatever they want, why can men talk about it and nobody looks at them different."
