Love Island sex code explained – from NVQ level meanings to football phrases

LOVE Island wouldn't be the same without the secret language used to describe 'doing bits'.

If you're struggling to decipher the codes used by the Islanders then you're in luck – here's everything you need to know.

What are the NVQ levels?

The girls' sex code to describe events happening between couples under the sheets was developed by Faye.

The 26 year-old lettings manager decided to base the sex codes on National Vocational Qualification levels, known as NVQ levels.

In the real world, there are five NVQ levels offering a work-based way of learning in schools, colleges and workplaces.

However, in the Love Island villa, they are used to grade the level of bedroom gymnastics between couples, and they are as follows:

  • Entry Level NVQ – A snog
  • NVQ1 – Sexual act using hands
  • NVQ2 – Oral
  • NVQ3 – Full on sex

What are the football phrases?

The football terminology selected as sex codes by the boys may be more familiar to viewers, but are no means any easier to understand what they mean for the Islanders.

The codes were selected by Toby, who plays football outside of the villa for Hashtag United, a semi-professional club based in Essex.

The sex codes the boys use to describe the action are as follows:

  • One nill – An act performed on one person
  • Handball – Sexual act using hands
  • Header – Oral
  • Streaker on the pitch – Full on nudity

Last year's sex codes on Love Island were based on breakfast foods, with tomato referring to touching breasts and avocado meaning clothes off and straight down to business.
