Things got heated – very heated – in today’s (October 5) Loose Women, as the panel argued over a reimagining of James Bond.
In light of Gemma Arterton’s ‘re-written’ Quantum of Solace role for the #MeToo era, Loose Women decided to debate the age-old issue of sexism in James Bond movies.
Although contentious from the off, it didn’t take long for Kaye Adams and Carol McGiffin to clash over the dated traditions of Bond, with Carol hitting out: “It’s a film! It’s fiction”.
“Shouldn’t all of these film franchises start to evolve and reflect modern attitudes?” Kaye asked, suggesting women actors are often cast as “a bit of totty”.
“It’s the same in all sorts of dramas,” Carol argued, before dismissing the near-unbelievable names given to Bond Girls (Holly Goodhead, anyone?) as something from “years ago”.
“Look, you can’t change that,” she insisted. “I can’t get enough of those old films. I love it! I don’t care,” with Kaye interjecting: “I’ve got a 16-year-old daughter, I care.”
Offering Kaye some sage advice, Carol then replied: “Don’t watch it, then!”
Viewers were split over the debate, with many agreeing with Carol. Bond films are Bond films. Don’t overthink them,” one viewer wrote, while another criticised the #MeToo movement for turning into “a battle of the sexes”.
Some were happy to acknowledge Bond’s flaws though, with one viewer pledging their support to Gemma Arterton. “[It’s] tragic to hear some of the comments…in response to sexism”, they wrote.
Something’s telling us now might be a bad time to bring up that female Bond theory… Oh well.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
