'KUWTK': Why Kim Kardashian West Had to 'Wing It' Speaking at the White House

Kim Kardashian West made another visit to the White House in June of 2019 and when it came time for her to say a few words, she had to “wing it.” Keep reading to learn why the founder of KKW Beauty couldn’t read the speech she planned on giving.

The reality star and entrepreneur has been making headway on prison reform. Last year she announced in her Vogue cover story she’d began studying to become a lawyer — here’s why we already know she’d make a great attorney — after helping to facilitate change herself through social media. The mother of four helped get Alice Marie Johnson out of prison while she’d been serving a life sentence without parole due to a first-time, nonviolent drug offense. And earlier this year, she helped free 17 inmates in 90 days.

Since then, Kardashian West has only continued her work on prison reform in between launching her shapewear line known as SKIMS, and welcoming a newborn baby — Psalm West — in May 2019.

Why Kim Kardashian West had to ‘wing’ White House speech

Over the summer, Kardashian West traveled to the White House (not for the first time) to promote the First Step Act that allows former prisoners a second chance at hiring. After being introduced by President Donald Trump, the star of Keeping Up With the Kardashians (KUWTK) announced her partnership with Lyft to provide transportation to and from work and job interviews.

Her speech, made from the White House’s East Room in front of a large audience — and an even bigger one on TV — made the 39-year-old nervous, according to Yahoo! Entertainment.

In the most recent episode of KUWTK, Kardashian West didn’t hide her nerves.

“I am freaking the f**k out,” she said about her trip to the famous 1600 Pennsylvania Ave address. “This is the biggest crowd ever. I’m getting pulled into this room that you see all the presidents speak at when they’re doing a press conference.”

To make the experience even more high-pressured, she couldn’t read her speech and instead had to “wing it” because of all the cameras in the room.

“I couldn’t even look down at my speech that I had printed out because there were cameras on me from literally every angle,” she explained. What did she do? Casually put her speech away make a statement off the cuff. “So I had to slip the speech, like, into my bag and just put my bag on the floor. And I had to wing it,” Kardashian West added.

What did she say in her speech?

Here’s a bit of the KUWTK star said in her speech:

“I’m so happy to announce today that we have a rideshare partnership. Formerly incarcerated people will be gifted cards, so that they can get rides to and from job interviews, to and from jobs, family members. And that is so important, so needed. And so I’m just thankful to everyone here that’s in support, and so proud of this partnership with the rideshare organization. So thank you.”

Not bad for someone who couldn’t take a moment to glance down at her prepared remarks. As her mother Kris Jenner would’ve said had she been in attendance, “You’re doing great, sweetie.”
