'Killing Eve' Season 2 Promises Major Changes for Eve's Relationships

The first season of Killing Eve made quite an impact. From Sandra Oh’s award-winning performance, to the fact that the series is written by Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge, there are so many reasons to love the BBC America thriller.

To recap, the cat-and-mouse detective series stars Oh as MI5 officer Eve Polastri, who’s on the trail of murderer Villanelle (Jodie Comer). As fans eagerly await the release of new episodes, here’s a look ahead at what’s in store in Killing Eve Season 2.

It’s coming soon.

Everyone’s favorite female-led spy thriller returns to BBC America on April 7, 2019.

The series continues right from Season 1’s cliffhanger.

According to BBC America, Season 2 will pick up right where Season 1 left off—with assassin Villanelle getting away after being stabbed by Eve:

Promotional stills for the second season confirm that Villanelle is very much alive—and on the move—in new episodes of the series:

The plot will surprise viewers.

At the Golden Globes, Comer told ELLE.com, “Obviously Eve stabbed Villanelle, let’s not forget that, but what’s going to be really interesting for the audience is how Villanelle reacts to that. It may not be as they suspect it will be.”

Comer also explained to Harper’s BAZAAR UK that the relationship between Eve and Villanelle will change in an interesting way: “There is sexual chemistry and there is also platonic admiration and fascination.” Basically, fans are in for some major surprises.

Season 2 has finished shooting.

In December, Comer posted an Instagram to mark the end of shooting. The show shot in Paris, London, and Amsterdam, according to the Radio Times.

Most of the cast is returning.

Oh and Comer are both back in their respective roles for Season 2, as is Fiona Shaw, who plays MI6 operative Carolyn Martens. Per the Radio Times, Kim Bodnia, who portrays Konstantin, Villanelle’s former boss, has also been spotted filming for Season 2.

However, it’s unclear if Owen McDonnell will be back as Eve’s husband Niko, or if Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Sean Delaney are returning as Elena and Kenny, respectively.

And some new characters have been announced.

A plethora of British performers are joining the cast of Killing Eve Season 2, some of whom you might recognize. Prolific actress Nina Sosanya (Love Actually), and Edward Bluemel, who recently co-starred in A Discovery of Witches, are both joining the cast. New British talent Shannon Tarbet and Henry Lloyd-Hughes will also appear, but it’s unclear who they’ll be playing as yet. A guest appearance by Julian Barratt has also been announced, per Deadline.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge isn’t writing the second season.

Showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge has stepped down from the Killing Eve helm and isn’t writing Season 2. Instead, it was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that Waller-Bridge hired Emerald Fennell as the new head writer. Fennell is probably best known for her role on PBS series Call the Midwife, and she’ll soon be seen be playing a young Camilla Parker-Bowles in The Crown Season 3. Alongside her acting credentials, Fennell is also an author of several novels and TV episodes.
