Katie Piper breaks her silence on her acid attacker being released from jail and says Strictly role is a 'good distraction' from 'difficult time'

The TV personality, 34, thanked fans for their support on Instagram this morning, and revealed her upcoming role on Strictly Come Dancing has already acted as a "welcome distraction".

Stefan Sylvestre, 30, was jailed indefinitely in 2009 after he threw sulphuric acid at the TV presenter on the orders of her ex, leaving her blind in one eye aged just 24.

Last week, the Parole Board confirmed he will be free within weeks, having displayed "empathy for the victim" as well as "remorse and shame".

Katie has now addressed the news with her 714,000 followers, writing on Friday: "Hi everyone, I felt it was important to put a message out to my friends, supporters and followers.

"This is a really difficult time for me. I am trying to come to terms with the decision and this is something I need to deal with."

Having signed up to the new series of Strictly last week, she went on: "Over the past 2 weeks Strictly has already given me such a welcome and positive distraction from my past.

"Whilst there is never a good time to hear this news, I am glad I have this new journey to concentrate on."

The philanthropist also shared a poignant message to her Instagram story, which read: "The bad news is, people are crueler, meaner and more evil than you've ever imagined.

"The good news is, people are kinder, gentler and more loving than you've ever dreamed."

Katie has had 40 facial operations since the attack, and while she is excited for the BBC show, she is aware her health problems will provide extra challenges.

She told the Mirror: "It will be hard with my eyesight. If you cover one eye and think you can’t see your peripheral, that is harder with dancing, steps and anticipating your partner."

However, she is still ready and raring to hit the dance floor, stating after her announcement: "I already know how much of an amazing experience it will be for me and I can’t wait to show my girls some of my new dance moves!"
