John Simm says ITV's new thriller Strangers won't leave you hanging

John Simm leads ITV’s new international thriller Strangers, about a man torn apart by grief and out of his element.

Simm plays Jonah Mulray, a professor who – reeling from the news that his wife has suddenly died – has to travel to Hong Kong to unravel the circumstances of her death.

Strangers will keep you guessing across its eight episodes… but no longer, with Simm telling Digital Spy and other press that he expects the series to be a one-off.

“This series does have a conclusion,” he promised. “Like in [Simm’s 2014 mini-series] Prey, it would be strange to have something [else] happen to Jonah after the whole world of hell he goes through in this.”

Strangers filmed for three months in London and another three in Hong Kong, shooting with two different crews, guaranteeing the series a very different feel to your standard British crime drama.

“Filming in Hong Kong was very interesting,” said Simm. “It’s mad. When you first go, it’s like Blade Runner. It’s discombobulating, and I think it is brilliant for the character because I had [that feeling] as well!

“I was jet-lagged and looking around thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is insane’. It’s a very different place to London, a very different place in every way… it’s quite something to behold. It had its own challenges, like the heat, but it was great for the character.”

Strangers, also starring Emilia Fox, Dervla Kirwan, Anthony Wong and Katie Leung, begins Monday, September 10 on ITV.
