John Cleese tells GMB host to ‘shut up’ in awkward interview moment

Good Morning Britain viewers were left in stitches as actor John Cleese told Ed balls to "shut up" during a live TV chat.

The Fawlty Towers star was speaking to Ed and co-presenter Susanna Reid on the programme, which aired on Tuesday 10 October, but he struggled to get a word in as Ed quickly asked him question after question.

Talking about joining the GB News team, John said the news channel "made me the best offer anyone has ever made anyone in television".

But Ed interrupted to quip that John was the only presenter joining the controversial TV channel rather than leaving at the moment – following Laurence Fox's sacking and suspension of Dan Wootton.

"Well they are clearing out a certain amount, which is not a bad idea," John said. Ed then chimed in once more before the TV and film star had finished responding to a question, and 83-year-old John hit back: "Will you shut up?"

The trio began to laugh, as Susanna agreed: "Well, um, yeah! You are asking a question and then talking over the answer."

The Monty Python actor then said he didn't know what questions Ed wanted him to answer.

Ed, who recently made a surprise return to the Strictly studio, teased that it is "what us interviewers do, you'll find out". But comic legend John reminded him: "Yes I know, I've done quite a few."

Fans of the show were quick to head over to X, formerly Twitter, to share their amusement, with one viewer writing: "Rather enjoyable Ed Balls being told to shut up. He blurted out his (pointless) thoughts over the top @JohnCleese answering."

Another joked: "Cleese saying what we all want to, shut up Ed."

"John Cleese is great, Ed Balls and Susanna’s face when John told Ed to shut up haha," a third said, while a fourth penned: "How rude Ed Balls was to be told to shut up by John Cleese. GOOD ON HIM LEGEND."

Others showed their annoyance at Ed's interruptions, with one posting: "At a couple of points he tried to talk down Cleese while the guest was trying to answer the previous question."

A second added: "That's why I don't watch it when Ed Balls and Susannah Reid talk all over the guests."
