Joe Sugg 'launching a pop career' after writing music with best mate Conor Maynard

The YouTube star, 27, danced his way to the Strictly final last weekend and in 2019 there could be music to go with his impressive moves.

Conor, who is currently starring in Kinky Boots on Broadway and released new track How You Love Me with Hardwell and Snoop Dogg last week, lifted the lid on his pal's ambitions.

Speaking exclusively to The Sun Online, he said: "We've worked on a bunch of stuff together. Six months ago I was constantly at his house working on tracks together. He's always expressed an interest in music.

"We did a parody song together and it reached number 4 on iTunes, which was hilarious because we did a 'write a song in an hour challenge' for YouTube. That was a good confidence booster, like let's see what we can do with real music.

"Nothing's finished or set in stone yet, but he still has a solid interest in music."

Conor and his brother Jack used to live close to Joe in London and they enjoyed many nights out together.

The 26-year-old was shocked when Joe revealed he was taking part in Strictly and admitted he wasn't sure how he would fare having seen him dance in clubs.

He explained: "I remember when he first told us he was doing it I was like 'OK'. I've been out with him many times. There's a whole group of us who hang out pretty much every day.

"I've seen him out in clubs I would never say dancing is one of his strong points.

"I couldn't believe how hard he dived in and went for it. I was really surprised and impressed."

Conor shot to fame in 2012 when his debut album Contrast topped the charts in the UK.

While his music career faltered in the years that followed, his popularity on YouTube skyrocketed to more than 8.5million subscribers, opening the the door for a lead role on Broadway and collaborations with superstar artists.

He revealed Cyndi Lauper is a big fan of his YouTube work, so much so she reached out to him and asked if he was interested in the role of Charlie Price in Kinky Boots.

The US singer wrote the music and lyrics for the hit musical and flew him out to New York to see the show.

Conor explained: "It's something my YouTube channel is completely to thank for. I didn't think I had the skill set to do it.

"It's such an amazing story, such a feel good musical.

"I said I'd love to do it. I did a half audition with the director. I read through one scene in the ladies bathroom of the theatre. It was the only room with nothing going on. Then I had three weeks of rehearsals and I've been doing it every day for the last month."

In the New Year Conor will resume releasing his solo material which he called "nerve-wracking but exciting".

He also has a huge festival appearance in Brazil in front of 75,000 people with DJ Alok.
