Jodie Whittaker has hit back at critics of the new series of Doctor Who who have accused the show of being too politically correct.
The BBC series has included storylines such as Rosa Parks and the American Civil Rights movement and partition in India in series 11, though some aren’t happy.
Some critics have claimed that dwindling ratings (that aren’t really dwindling) are down to a more diverse cast and viewer frustration with plotlines that have tended to focus on non-white history, though Whittaker has defended the show in pushing the issues forward.
“What’s the point of making a show if it doesn’t reflect society today?” the actress told the Evening Standard.
“We have the opportunity with this show like no other to dip to future, to past, to present, to new worlds and time zones. There is never going to be a drought in the stories you can tell.
“It’s always topical. [Showrunner] Chris [Chibnall] is a very present-minded person, who is very aware of the world he lives in and is passionate about storytelling. It would be wrong of him to not have used the past. He does it in a really beautiful way.”
Meanwhile, this weekend’s episode of Doctor Who saw the Doctor and her companions land on a moon turned postal factory.
However, many viewers couldn’t help but theorise that the episode was satirising real-life company Amazon.
Doctor Who series 11 will continue with ‘The Witchfinders’ on Sunday, November 25 at 6.30pm on BBC One. The show is also aired on BBC America in the US.
