“This is none of their business,” the late-night comedian says while slamming the city council’s involvement in a decision that is out of their jurisdiction.
The West Hollywood City Council voted unanimously this past Monday to remove Donald Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but by Tuesday night, Jimmy Kimmel had a question: Why?
"Here’s the thing. Trump’s star isn’t in West Hollywood where they voted, it’s in Hollywood. And one has absolutely nothing to do with the other," the ABC late-night host told his viewers during his monologue. "West Hollywood and Hollywood are like Virginia and West Virginia, they’re unrelated, which means there’s no reason for the West Hollywood City Council to be voting on this."
"This is like if your next-door neighbors voted for you to paint your house," he continued. "They didn’t install his star, they didn’t pay for his star. And when the star is damaged, it doesn’t cost them anything. This is none of their business."
It was perhaps a surprising statement to hear coming from Kimmel, who has been one of the most vocal critics on late-night TV of President Trump, his administration and Republicans, in general. While Kimmel’s audience clapped in approval at his mention of the council’s decision, he didn’t waiver from his position on the star located on Hollywood Boulevard. But it sounds like it’s more of a turf war for the late-night comedian, as his "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" studio is located right in the middle of Hollywood on the busy boulevard.
"We get it. You don’t like Trump, but why are you voting on this?" he asked. "This is our sidewalk, this is our filthy, disease-ridden, urine-soaked sidewalk. If you busy-bodies want to remove something from it, how about you adopt one of the 12 drunken Spidermen we have out there?"
He suggested there was some hypocrisy at play when he called out another Hollywood star bearing a questionable name in wake of the #MeToo movement.
"You know who has a star right next to Donald Trump? Kevin Spacey has one right there," Kimmel pointed out. "No one says a word about it. So vote on that tomorrow."
Kimmel concluded his thoughts on the topic by saying, "That is as close as I get to defending Donald Trump."
Trump was awarded his star in 2007 after years of hosting NBC’s reality TV hit "The Apprentice," and it has since been the site of many protests — some of which have including the act of defecating. The star was first smashed to pieces with a sledgehammer and pick-axe in October 2016, one month before Trump was elected President of the United States. The second destruction took place just last month after a man reduced it to rubble using a pick-axe.
The Hollywood Historic Trust said it would be repairing the star after the recent smashing. Hollywood Chamber of Commerce CEO Leron Gubler backed the notion by stating that all stars are part of the fixed landmark on Hollywood Boulevard, and backed Kimmel’s claim that the city of West Hollywood doesn’t have much power in this situation.
"Once we receive a communication from the City of West Hollywood, it will be referred to our Executive Committee for consideration at their next meeting," Gubler told TMZ. "As of now, there are no plans to remove any stars from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The West Hollywood City Council does not have jurisdiction over the Hollywood Walk of Fame."
