I’m pleased to deliver the news all AHS fans have been waiting for since Freak Show: Jessica Lange is returning to American Horror Story. To be clear, she’ll return for only one episode as her Murder House character, Constance Langdon, in the upcoming crossover season, AHS: Apocalypse. Still, this is a huge win for viewers who have felt her absence since she left. Before her Season 4 departure, Lange was the leading lady of the anthology series. Her characters were integral to the plots of each season, and her acting led to four Emmy nods (and two wins). When she left to pursue other projects, series creator Ryan Murphy brought in Lady Gaga to lessen the blow. While Gaga won a Golden Globe for her performance in Hotel, the series has never been quite as good. As a matter of fact, hardcore fans have been saying the same thing since Hotel: “It’s not the same.”
As Sarah Paulson has been the show’s saving grace since Lange moved on, it was only fitting that she was the one to announce Lange’s return. The actress shared the good news during the TCA summer press tour on Friday.
Murphy has also confirmed Paulson, Kathy Bates, and Evan Peters will star in Season 8, as well as Cody Fern, who appeared in another of Murphy’s series, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
Fern will play a grown-up version of Michael Langdon (aka the Anti-Christ), the child of Tate Langdon (Peters) and Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton). Paulson will play both Billie Dean and Cordelia Foxx, Bates will play Ms. Meade, Adina Porter will play Dina Stevens, Leslie Grossman is Coco St. Pierre-Vanderbilt, Billie Lourd is Mallory, and Emma Roberts will reprise her role as Coven’s Madison Montgomery.
The season will be set in the near-future, and according to executive producer Alexis Martin Woodall, “The story begins with the end of the world and then our world begins.”
American Horror Story: Apocalypse premieres Sept. 12 on FX.
