Jade tragically died from cervical cancer in 2009 when sons Bobby, now 15, and Freddie, 14, were still very young.
But Jeff has revealed that almost a decade on, his kids are still processing what happened.
Jeff told the Daily Star Sunday: “Grief evolves. It can be dependent on the age of the children.
“You might think 10 years later it’s surely going to be calming down a bit and they’ll be used to it and it’ll cause them less pain. But the truth is they’re going through teenage changes.”
He went on to explain that he used to have “monthly discussion” about Jade with his sons, but that the boys now shy away from speaking about what happened.
Jeff continued: “You know you love your children. But what happens when the unknown starts to present itself? What do you do when they’re crying for their mum? What do you do when they’re being naughty because they’re upset about losing their mum?”
Jeff got support for the loss through a charity called Grief Encounter, which offers support to bereaved children.
The former footballer went on to train as a grief therapist and got married to Kate Dwyer in September this year.
The couple tied the knot in Portugal with Bobby and Freddie acting as his best men.
In an emotional interview with Hello!, Jeff, 39, said PR director Kate had changed their lives beyond measure.
Jeff explained: “I'm so happy to marry Kate, who has brought so much stability to my life.
“It doesn't just represent Kate and I putting rings on each other's fingers. It represents the fact that we won at something really tricky. We won at becoming a family.”
He added: “Before it was just three boys rattling around in a house on our own, trying to get through life. Then Kate came along and worked so hard at making us complete.
“She hasn't just completed one person, she's completed a family and given three boys a real sense of belonging.”
