Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez will direct an episode of The CW's Charmed reboot

The CW’s Charmed reboot has signed-up a familiar face as one of its directors.

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is set to direct the 11th episode of the new series, which will act as a “feminist” reboot of the classic series.

“I’m very excited about that opportunity and obviously very excited that I get to do it with three Latinas,” Rodriguez said (via Variety). “It’s really f***ing awesome. It’s going to be really exciting to see what that journey is.”

Rodriguez does have some directing experience, having worked behind the camera on the last season of Jane the Virgin, though Charmed will act as her debut on a show she isn’t also starring in.

The Charmed reboot hasn’t had the easiest journey, with a number of the original cast members hitting out at it.

Star Holly Marie Combs has been pretty vocal, and most recently Alyssa Milano admitted she wished she’d been involved in the new version.

However, new boss Jennie Snyder Urman recently told Digital Spy that she would love to see the originals appear in the CW version… though not just yet.

“It would be great, I’d love it, so we’ll see,” she said. “You have to dig in and let these characters… let the audience learn who they are and peel away layers and… hopefully you want the audience to fall in love with these three women, but that would be a dream. I would love it.”

The new series will star Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery as sisters Macy, Mel and Maggie, who band together as they discover their powers and battle dark forces.

Charmed premieres in the US on The CW on October 14.
