James Bulger’s tearful mum blasts Oscar-nominated film for ‘humanising Venables’

James’ Bulger’s mum Denise Fergus emotionally revealed that watching clips from the Oscar-nominated film about her son’s murder made her feel as though she was "reliving the nightmare" all over again.

She and husband Stuart also hit out at the film for trying to "humanise Jon Venables".

Denise recently said that she was "disgusted" after the documentary was nominated for an Academy Award.

Irish filmmaker Vincent Lambe’s Detainment is based on interviews with the toddlers killers Jon Venables and Robert Thompson from police tapes.

James had been just two years old when he was killed by the 10-year-olds after being kidnapped from a shopping centre in Merseyside in February 1993.

The filmmaker claimed that he had not contacted the family because he knew that they would say no.

Appearing on This Morning today with husband Stuart, Denise revealed that she hadn’t watched the film.

However Stuart said that he had and that the scenes made him "physically sick".

Revealing that she first heard about the documentary in December, Denise said: "I thought, I’m not going to give this any publicity."

But after the film was nominated for an Oscar, Denise wanted to bring light to how unhappy she was about the film.

"It’s just reliving the nightmare, I try to put it behind me," Denise said. "I try to do my best to be James’ voice but something like this puts me right back down."

Meanwhile Stuart said that, unlike Denise, he had watched the film and that it had made him "physically sick".

He said: "The scenes that they had to reenact was horrifying."

"They try to humanise Venables and it feels so wrong," Stuart added.

In a statement, filmmaker Lambe said: "I have enormous sympathy for the Bulger family and I am extremely sorry for any upset the film may have caused them. With hindsight, I am sorry I didn’t make Mrs Fergus aware of the film."

He added: "The film was not made for financial gain and nobody involved in the making of the film intends to profit from it."
