ITV This Morning: Phillip Schofield GRILLS Max George in awkward Meghan Markle chat

Phillip Schofield, 57, and Holly Willoughby, 38, spoke to  Max, 30, about his career since his former boyband went their separate ways in 2014.

Recent reports have claimed Meghan Markle, 37, was exchanging messages with The Wanted star on Twitter after it emerged the Duchess was also speaking with former X Factor star Matt Cardle, 36.

The messages were supposed to have been exchanged between Meghan and Max in 2013 after the Duchess split from her ex-husband, Trevor Engelston, 42, although the rumours are unconfirmed.

Appearing on This Morning today, Phillip couldn’t help but quiz the pop star about his reported past relationship with Meghan, with Max denying the claims.

Was there anything from her side?

When Phillip quizzed The Wanted star at first, Max strongly denied the claims, telling the host: “I haven’t. I don’t know where that came from.

“I did read something over the weekend, but I also read it was something to do with her looking for an Englishman or whatever.

“I don’t get why they’re doing this to her at the minute,” Max continued, before adding: “There was nothing from my side.”

Eager to dig a little deeper, Phillip carried on with the line of questioning, asking the pop star: “Was there anything from her side?”

Reiterating his earlier sentiment, a red-faced Max told Phillip: “No, there’s nothing in it.”

As the pop star became increasingly agitated by the discussion on Meghan, the host chimed: “Oh, ok,” before the interview turned to another topic.

On yesterday’s show, Phillip and Holly discussed the launch of Love Island, with the presenters holding differing views on the hit ITV reality show.

Excited about the return of the series, Holly said: “We’ve had Love Island marriages, babies, all sorts.

“But it’s so weird to think that tonight they could be meeting their future husband for the first time!” Holly continued, but Phillip was a bit more cynical.

The silver haired host remarked: “Or they could meet someone, come out of the island, have a relationship for a little while, get the magazine deal, and then that’s it it’s over.”

Teasing Phillip, Holly quipped: “Has your grumpy little gnome come back?” referring to an interview earlier on in the show with three women who believed they could speak with mystical beings.

Phillip replied: “Yeah there he is, just there,” as he chuckled away.

Holly and Phillip have become renowned faces of the ITV magazine programme, alongside Eamonn Holmes, 59, and his wife Ruth Langsford, 59, who stand in for the hosts on Friday’s and during the half-term breaks.

However, This Morning star Dr Ranj Singh, 39, has revealed there is a “reserves list” for when the regular hosts are unable to complete their presenting duties.

“I’m on the reserve list now so if anyone calls in sick, I’m one of the people to call,” Dr Ranj told Express.co.uk after he presented the show alongside agony aunt Vanessa Feltz, 57, last year.

It was really nerve wracking; it’s a huge show and a big responsibility.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
