For months, royal experts and fans have tried to predict Meghan Markle’s birth plan. And now, with the Duchess of Sussex’s due date quickly approaching, many are convinced the mother-to-be will welcome her firstborn son or daughter at home.
Most modern royal women have welcomed their babies at the St Mary’s Hospital Lindo Wing and posed for a photocall just hours later. Princess Diana delivered both Prince William and Prince Harry at the famed hospital and Kate Middleton welcomed all three of her children there, too. However, Meghan Markle might opt for a more private, at-home birth like Queen Elizabeth and the royal women before her did.
Does tradition play a part in Meghan Markle’s alleged decision to have a home birth? We think not. Up ahead, find out why some believe the Duchess of Sussex is considering a home birth at Frogmore Cottage.
Why does Meghan Markle want a home birth?
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their bundle of joy later this month and some believe they will try for a home birth. However, if things don’t go according to plan, Meghan Markle is fully prepared to give birth in a hospital if necessary.
A source confirmed that while Meghan Markle is in good health, she hasn’t ruled out a potential hospital birth for safety reasons. “It is her favored choice, but it obviously depends on how things are nearer the time,” the unnamed source revealed to Daily Mail.
The queen’s doctors might have something to do with it
Why does Meghan Markle want a home birth? Some think it has something to do with Queen Elizabeth’s doctors. “Meghan said she doesn’t want the men in suits. She was adamant that she wanted her own people. It did leave a few of us baffled,” says a Daily Mail source. “It is slightly surprising. These people [the Queen’s doctors] are the best of the best and when it comes down to it, their role would actually be very limited in the birth itself, assuming all goes to plan,” another insider dished.
That said, Meghan Markle’s refusal of Queen Elizabeth’s doctors has not been confirmed by the royal family and might not be reason enough to have a home birth. After all, if it were really about the doctors, she could hire a team of her own for the hospital birth.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex want privacy
The real reason Prince Harry and Meghan Markle want a home birth? It might have something to do with privacy. According to Kensington Palace, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to keep the arrival of their baby as private as possible.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby,” the palace said in a statement last week. “Their royal highnesses have taken a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private. The Duke and Duchess look forward to sharing the exciting news with everyone once they have had an opportunity to celebrate privately as a new family.”
A hospital birth risks media attention, which could be why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are considering something more intimate and private such as a home birth.
