Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista’s latest project is Final Score, an action movie set in a football stadium that feels a world away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But a sneaky Easter egg hints at a connection between director Scott Mann’s film and the MCU.
Final Score sees a group of terrorists secretly infiltrate West Ham’s home ground. The opening of the movie identifies them as being from ‘Sokovia’, a region of Russia that was once home to a popular separatist movement.
Although we can’t confirm the spelling of this ‘Sokovia’, it seems to share its name with the fictional MCU eastern European nation that was the setting of Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s climax, and gave its name to the Sokovia Accords that sought to put Earth’s heroes under government control in Captain America: Civil War.
“I can’t take credit for any of that,” Bautista told Digital Spy. “I don’t know where all that came from.
“I don’t know the background to that particular piece – I wasn’t involved in any of those particular scenes. I don’t know where all them stems from – I guess from the mind of Scott Mann.
“Oddly enough, it may tie in somewhere. I don’t know.”
To be honest, we don’t think that Final Score is set in the MCU – the Marvel version of Sokovia is its own country, not a region in Russia, and no-one ever mentions calling in the Avengers to save the day.
Interestingly, the comic-book version of Drax was a human man called Arthur Douglas who was saved from death by Thanos’ grandfather Kronos and transformed into the familiar green warrior we know and love – so there is probably a way to build an MCU connection if you want to.
Bautista also revealed that the delays surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 after director James Gunn’s firing could result in changes to the plot of Avengers 4.
Ray Stevenson and Pierce Brosnan also star in Bautista’s new movie.
Final Score will be released on September 7 in the UK and September 14 in the US.
