When actress Carrie Fisher passed away, fans and collaborators mourned her sudden death. Fisher was best known for portraying Princess/General Leia Organa in the Star Wars franchise, but she had many other roles of note. One of those was the series Catastrophe, the fourth and final season of which aired from January 9 through February 12. Here’s what you need to know about the series, and how it addresses her death.
What is Catastrophe?
Catastrophe is a British comedy series which airs on Channel 4 in the UK. It stars Irish actress Sharon Horgan as a school teacher who becomes pregnant after having a fling with an American advertising executive, played by Rob Delaney. The two decide to pursue a relationship, though they often butt heads.
Who does Carrie Fisher play on Catastrophe?
Fisher had a recurring guest role on Catastrophe as Rob’s mother Mia. Mia isn’t exactly Sharon’s biggest fan and is critical of her son and his new wife. However, she is a well-meaning character, despite frequently inserting herself in other peoples’ business.
Fisher passed away in 2016
In Dec. 2016, Fisher suffered a cardiac arrest. She died just a few days after the incident, and it was later revealed that drugs may have contributed to her death. Just one day after she passed, Fisher’s mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, had a stroke, and she died as well.
Catastrophe was Carrie Fisher’s last TV appearance
Fisher had numerous projects in the works at the time of her death. Star Wars: The Last Jedi had already completed filming, and was released as scheduled in Dec. 2017. A fantasy film, Wonderwell, is supposedly completed but does not yet have a released date. Catastrophe was Fisher’s final TV project, and Season 3 began airing just months after her death. Fisher appears in the final episode of Season 3.
The show paid tribute to her
In the Season 3 finale, Mia comes to the UK in the wake of tragedy. She proves to be her usual, not-so-tactful self, but Sharon’s mom, Carol, finds her attitude to be refreshing. Mia also chastises Rob after finding out that he’s fallen off the wagon, telling him about his father’s abusive alcoholic behavior that he never knew about.
The episode aired on April 4, 2017. After the credits roll, an image of Fisher as Mia appears, along with the words “For Carrie.”
Does Season 4 address her death?
Season 4 of Catastrophe has completed its airing in the UK, but it’s not yet available for viewing in other countries. Seasons 1-3 are currently available to watch with an Amazon Prime subscription, and Season 4 will be available on March 15, 2019.
Ahead of its airing in the UK, Delaney spoke about the series finale, noting that in it, he finds out the Mia has passed away. Delaney called the episode a “poignant tribute” to Fisher, adding that the actress “was so amazing and such a massive part of the show.” So though she won’t appear in the episode, which was taped after her death, it will pay tribute to Fisher.
