EastEnders has been named Best Soap at the 2020 Inside Soap Awards – voted by the public and readers of the popular magazine – with the Walford based soap sweeping up a host of other prizes too.
It has been a great result for Coronation Street too with the hugely topical Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) and Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) coercive abuse storyline netting a trio of three prizes each.
Neighbours won two awards on the night as well and Emmerdale and Casualty didn’t go away empty handed, securing an award each too.
The Inside Soap Awards were revealed on the Inside Soap Facebook page and YouTube channel on Monday evening.
Best Actor Ian Bartholomew (Geoff) shared: ‘For me, witnessing Shelley crumbling as Yasmeen, and watching this character that I was playing destroy her in front of me was actually really quite upsetting.
‘I felt bad doing all those things, but we both wanted to do it as well and as truthfully as we could.
‘I did see the episode of Gogglebox where they watched it – they were all delighted that Geoff got some kind of comeback!’
I’m A Celebrity star Jessica Plummer took home the award for Best Actress for scenes which saw her character Chantelle Atkins abused and eventually killed by evil husband Gray Atkins Toby-Alexander Smith).
Jessica enthused: ‘This is probably one of the biggest achievements of my career. It was an honour to even be nominated, so I’m completely blown away.
‘I came off social media for a quite long time (for me!) after my final episode aired as I personally had to mourn my character and all the changes in my life, but when I came back, the reception I got from everyone was so heart-warming. Chantelle was a loved character and it really was an honour to play her.’
