I'm a Celebrity praise Anne Hegerty's brave performance in Bushtucker trial

The Chase‘s Anne Hegerty may have technically failed one of the most disgusting trials in I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! history, but she’s absolutely a hero in the eyes of viewers.

Anne, who inspired so many by speaking about autism in Monday’s show, was the latest celebrity picked to do a Bushtucker trial, with many theorising that those voting for her hoped she’d win and move into the more comfortable Croc Creek camp from Snake Rock.

Before she ventured off to the trial site, Anne’s fellow Snake Rock campmates encouraged her that they were supporting her and assuring her that she was “brilliant” no matter how the trial turned out.

The trial Monstrous Monoliths locked Anne between two giant stones to unlock stars from Perspex boxes by working out four-digit codes. While the code-breaking might seem right up Anne’s alley, she was repeatedly bombarded with slime and fish guts.

The slime landing on Anne clearly rattled her, but she bravely carried on and managed to win two stars in the first round. But with a total of ten stars to win before she could feed both camps and move to Croc Creek, the relentless dumping of goo got to be too much.

Holly Willoughby was a big source of support as Anne struggled, telling her: “This is just a bit of slime. That’s all that is. Just ignore it. There’s nothing in there that’s going to hurt you.”

“Get out of my ear you thing,” Anne complained as a worm crawled over her head. “That’s revolting of you.”

As Monstrous Monoliths took its toll on Anne, viewers questioned the choice of those who picked her for this specific trial:

Chief among those feeling bad was Anne’s The Chase co-star Mark Labbett (aka The Beast), who now regrets voting to put her into the trial:

Others felt the same way:

It eventually got too stressful, and Anne called time by telling Dec and Holly: “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. I can’t do it. I’m so sorry.”

While she’d technically failed the trial and would be returning to Snake Rock, Holly and Dec congratulated Anne for winning the two meals for Croc Creek.

“Well done for coming down here and facing it head-on,” Dec assured her. “That takes guts.”

“Yeah, fish guts,” Anne hilariously joked.

Reflecting on the trial, Anne explained: “I did the first one in 90 seconds. That was okay. I got two stars. Then it all went pear-shaped. Absolutely freak-out disgusting.

“And I came out and I was just covered in gunk and mealworms and I was like no, no more, can’t do it, so I shouted I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Well, we got two meals for the other camp. Aren’t they lucky? I really, really hope that they’re glad.”

Viewers were hugely supportive of Anne’s bravery:

When she arrived back in Snake Rock, there was none of the traditional disappointment from the other campmates that comes with a failed trial.

Instead, Fleur East, Rita Simons and James McVey were far more concerned with checking on Anne to make sure she was okay following the traumatic experience.

“The sheer fact that she’s here at all is a testament to her bravery,” James said in the Bush Telegraph. “We’re just really glad that she came back.

“Emily left us yesterday so we’re really glad that she’s back because I don’t think we can face losing another one of our team yellow.”

The support from Snake Rock was hugely heartwarming for fans:

I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! continues on Wednesday (November 21) at 9pm on ITV, followed immediately thereafter by Extra Camp on ITV2.
