Idris Elba compares Luther to Batman as he promises series 5 is making some huge changes

Luther‘s upcoming fifth series is going to alter a few things for the grizzled detective, according to star Idris Elba.

The BBC’s pulse-racing drama has thrown everything at DCI John Luther over the past four seasons, but still, Elba insists that “it was really great getting back into the coat”. When he finally does return to our screens in the near future, what can fans expect?

Speaking to Metro, the Hobbs and Shaw actor recently divulged: “All I can say is we know how long the fanbase wait for the show, and we’re never taking that lightly.

“So as much as we have to keep one eye on how do we not do what we’ve done before, at the same time saying to the audience, ‘This is Luther’, so you recognise the traits.

“That’s the tough part. Because after five seasons, you kind of go,’Oh where do we go now?’ and for me I’m very excited about the season, it feels very similar to what we’ve seen but it takes a few turns. Luther is still the character we love to hate.”

Although the 46-year-old recently found time to direct his first feature film, Yardie, Elba still loves throwing on the iconic tweed jacket and hulking through the tortured streets of London.

“It was really great getting back into the coat and being that guy again,” he noted. “If you notice every season Luther comes out – he goes through such trauma, but comes out and ahh. I’m interested in that. Like in real life, the toll that job takes on investigative services, especially murder detectives, the things they see.”

Elba then concluded with a rather interesting, black-winged comparison.

“Luther is an amplification of that story, he’s like Batman. But we do pay attention – like each season how does he get past that? Neil [Cross’s] writing is really clever.”

Luther is expected to return to BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US in late 2018.
