How Thomas Markle’s subtle gesture betrays truth about Meghan Markle’s ghosting

Despite complaining about the media attention he receives, Thomas Markle has been surprisingly comfortable in the spotlight ever since his daughter Meghan Markle started dating Prince Harry.

But, after months of setting up paparazzi shoots, being accused of faking a heart attack and moaning constantly about the ‘disrespect’ shown to him by the royal family, Thomas has now claimed his pregnant daughter has ‘ghosted’ him.

In an appearance on Good Morning Britain today, 74-year-old Thomas said he messaged the Duchess of Sussex every day, but hasn’t had a reply from her in weeks.

Here, body language expert Judi James explains the subtle gestures that gave away how Thomas was really feeling about his increasingly bitter family feud…

Only Piers Morgan could compare his own ‘ghosting’ by an intelligent, confident woman – who took an executive decision to drop contact rather than risk her royal romance with Harry going public – to Thomas Markle being dropped by his actual daughter for repeatedly talking to the press in what look like acts of bizarre disloyalty.

But clearly that mock-empathetic bond worked on Meghan’s dad, who then added to his list of misdemeanours by agreeing to the use of that very trivial trendy term of ‘ghosting’ to describe his own tragic situation, conveniently giving Piers a headline-friendly soundbite.

Given there is a time delay from Thomas’ home in San Diego, Markle’s body language still looked unconvincing. Back to do yet another press interview to complain how press interviews had ruined his relationship with his daughter, he looked oddly unsure about his answers to a couple of simple, direct questions.

Had he spoken about it all to Meghan’s mum, Doria Ragland? He used a long, ‘umm…’ pause, plus an eye dart to the right.

Had he been ghosted by his daughter? Another long, ‘umm…’ plus an eye-dart to the left this time.

He became animated when trying to complain he had only done five interviews, though, with both hands spreading out in a gesture of innocence before his left hand waggled for added emphasis.

The irony of doing a sixth interview to complain how the others had caused him so many problems looked to be lost on him, and for a man who – like his daughter – had a career in the world of filming and celebrity, he sounded and looked genuinely disingenuous about what he clearly thinks is not his fault.
