When news broke that Princess Eugenie had become engaged to Jack Brooksbank in January 2018, fans couldn’t help but think one thing: another royal wedding? It’s not that the news wasn’t exciting, but we just learned in November 2017 that Prince Harry had proposed to Meghan Markle.
Initially, Eugenie and Brooksbank’s engagement felt poorly timed, considering the news seemed overshadowed by the more popular royals. However, the day Eugenie and Brooksbank shared their news was planned strategically — and happened to be much later than they originally had hoped. The reason? Harry and Markle.

Harry’s engagement had to be announced first
Apparently, Eugenie and Brooksbank could have actually been engaged long before Harry and Markle. A source spilled to Vanity Fair that once Harry’s plans to propose became more obvious, he was given first dibs at publicly sharing his engagement.
“It’s my understanding that Eugenie and Jack decided some time ago that they wanted to get married, and there was some talk about a wedding in 2017, but they had to wait for Harry to go first,” the source revealed.
Eugenie had to push back her wedding date, too
If Eugenie had it her way, she would have gotten married before even ringing in 2018. According to Metro.co.uk, she was specifically hoping for September 2017. During this month, however, Harry and Markle were set to complete duties abroad, so her wedding was pushed to Oct. 12, 2018.
Eugenie’s rank may have had something to do with it
Rank is a big deal when it comes to the royal family. Harry’s place in line for the throne is ahead of Eugenie, which may have forced Harry’s wedding to take precedence. Harry is No. 6 in the line of succession, falling after Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Considering Harry’s uncle (and Eugenie’s father), Andrew, is seventh in line, that would make Princess Beatrice eighth and Eugenie ninth.

Her wedding will pull out all the stops
It sounds like Eugenie’s wedding will be worth the wait. There’s no doubt it would have been spectacular either way, but considering she had to wait to get engaged and married due to Harry and Markle, it’s going to be her time to shine.
According to Vanity Fair, “The feeling among the Yorks is that she deserves her moment in the spotlight and a big royal wedding with all the frills.”
Eugenie and Brooksbank will walk down the aisle at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle — the same place Harry and Markle tied the knot on May 19, 2018.
Eugenie has ‘no bad feelings’
Luckily, Eugenie isn’t taking being put in second place personally. The source for Vanity Fair revealed, “There are no bad feelings at all. Eugenie is very close to Harry, and she knows how the system works.”
