Samuel Leroy Jackson was born December 21, 1948, in Washington D.C. but grew up an only child in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The 70-year-old was initially interested in pursuing a degree in marine biology but switched to architecture before finally settling on acting.
After appearing in several television films, Samuel made his feature film debut in the 1972 independent film Together for Days before moving to New York City.
He played a minor role in the 1990 Martin Scorsese film Goodfellas before starring as John Raymond Arnold in 1993's Jurassic Park.

Samuel has appeared in over one hundred movies with the highest collective total of all box-office receipts thanks, in part, to his roles in The Avengers and Star Wars.

But, he is best known for his recurring roles as Mace Windu in both the Star Wars prequel trilogy and as Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Samuel has been married to actress and sports channel producer LaTanya Richardson since 1980 after the two met while attending Morehouse College, in Atlanta.
The married couple's only child, a daughter called Zoe, was then born two years later.
LaTanya has appeared in a string of Hollywood films including 1991's comedy-drama Fried Green Tomatoes, and 1993's romantic-comedy Sleepless in Seattle.
She has also starred alongside her husband in one of his films as she was cast as the voice of Frozone's wife in the Incredibles 2.
