How old is James May, what's The Grand Tour star's net worth, who's his partner Sarah Frater and what cars does he have?

But what else do we know about the Grand Tour host, also known as Captain Slow, who's often the butt of his co-presenters' jokes?

Who is James May? What is his background?

James Daniel May was born in Bristol on January 16, 1963, and is a British presenter, writer, and journalist.

He also has the nickname "Captain Slow" due to his careful driving style.

May is best known for hosting Top Gear (from 2002 to 2015), and now The Grand Tour with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond.

He is an ex-choirboy who loves classical music and plays the harpsichord.

James started his career as a sub-editor on The Engineer and later Autocar and he has also written regularly for Car Magazine and has a weekly column in The Daily Telegraph.

He was actually fired from Autocar for playing a prank by writing a secret message in the magazine's Road Test Year Book.

The task of writing the supplement was so boring, he hid the phrase "So you think it's really good, yeah? You should try making the bloody thing up; it's a real pain in the arse" in the text.

Autocar did not find it amusing however when readers started calling in, thinking it was a competition and promptly sacked him.

James has also written several motoring books and also co-authored Oz & James's  Big Wine Adventure which accompanied a TV series of the same name.

He first appeared in a driving show on Channel 4 in 1998 and he has presented James May's Top Toys for the BBC.

What is James May's net worth and what vehicles does he own?

James is said by Spears to be worth in the region of £9 million.

Unsurprisingly he has owned many cars including;

  • Saab 9-5 Aero
  • Bentley T2
  • Rolls Royce Phantom
  • Triumph 2000
  • Rover P6
  • Alfa Romeo 164
  • Rolls-Royce Corniche

May also owns and uses frequently a Brompton folding bicycle and a light aircraft which he bought after obtaining his light aircraft pilot's license in 2006.
