How Ant-Man might be the key to Doctor Strange's Avengers 4 plan

Warning: Contains spoilers for Ant-Man and The Wasp.

It’s widely accepted by now that Doctor Strange has a plan for Avengers 4.

He may have turned to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, but before that, he claimed to have assessed “14,000,605” possible futures using the Time Stone, and discovered the single one that leads to victory.

Then after a brief fight with Thanos, Strange gives up his stone, leading a short time later to the villain erasing half the population of the universe – including our hero and a bunch of his allies. Some plan, eh?

But his comments – “There was no other way” and “We’re in the end game now” – have led fans to speculate that, however dark things look, his plan is progressing. And reddit user Trullius has a good idea of what that plan is.

This theory states that the clue is in Ant-Man and The Wasp. The film’s mid-credits scene reveals that, when the Infinity Snap occurred, Scott Lang had shrunken down and was in the Quantum Realm – but Hope van Dyne and her parents, who were waiting to pull him out, were erased.

It looks like he’s stuck – but previous theories have suggested that he will be able to use a ‘time vortex’ (a mysterious phenomenon mentioned by Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet van Dyne) to travel through time and somehow undo Thanos’s actions.

Was Strange just playing for time to ensure that the Snap happened when Ant-Man was in the Quantum Realm? This would support the theory that Ant-Man will have a big part to play in Avengers 4, and explain why Strange seemed to give up after fighting Thanos for a relatively short amount of time.

Forget Thor or Captain Marvel – Lang might be the secret weapon who can undo all the mess that the Infinity Gauntlet has caused. Ant-Man really is the little hero that could.

Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019. Ant-Man and The Wasp is out now.
