Hollyoaks star Kai Owen reveals Pete Buchanan's return story as Joel Dexter plans revenge

Hollyoaks star Kai Owen has revealed new details of his return as Pete Buchanan, which will see him come face-to-face with Joel Dexter.

Jailed Pete makes an appearance after sending Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin) a letter through the post, congratulating her on her engagement to Joel.

The unwanted contact from Pete sends Cleo on a new downward spiral and Joel is horrified when he spots her bingeing again.

Unaware that Cleo has been struggling with her bulimia for months, Joel blames Pete as he believes the relapse is far more recent.

Joel pretends to still be a man of the cloth in other to get some time alone with Pete at the prison, but what is he planning?

Speaking about the upcoming scenes, Kai explained: “Pete is a very dark and manipulating character. Those are his default settings, so when Joel threatens him, those defects come out. He spots weakness and capitalises on it.

“When Pete discovers it’s Cleo’s fiancé, he immediately thinks of Cleo and his mind begins to work overtime: ‘Who is this man? What does he want? Is he a direct threat?’

“I still think Pete feels he did nothing wrong with what he did to Cleo, which in itself is terrible. He is wired this way, these are his thoughts. He needs serious help.”

Pete was jailed in 2016 after being found guilty of grooming and sexually abusing Cleo.

Rory Douglas-Speed, who plays Joel, added: “Pete is a terrifying character and quickly changes his ‘feeling sorry for himself’ act, by ramping up the pressure.

“It’s really strange for Joel and Pete to meet each other. After hearing so much about him over the past couple of years, it’s quite an anticipated meeting between both of the characters, which I’m sure the audience will find thrilling.

“Joel personally believes that Pete is at the centre of all of Cleo’s issues. That’s why he’s visiting him in the first place. You’ll have to wait and see what happens next week, but the audience will love and hate it all at the same time.

“I’d also like to say that I really enjoyed working with Kai, and I learned so much from him. He’s a genuinely lovely man, fantastic actor, and all round good guy.”

Hollyoaks airs these scenes on Friday, October 12 at 6.30pm on Channel 4.
