Here's when Taylor Swift and James Corden's Cats movie musical crawls into cinemas

The upcoming Cats movie has landed (on its feet) with a release date, and it seems it will be clashing claws with another rather big movie.

The adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which will star Taylor Swift and James Corden, is set to hit cinemas on December 20, 2019.

That was the slot that was originally held by the movie adaptation of musical Wicked, which has been pushed back, and will put Cats head-to-head with Star Wars: Episode IX.

We’re sure that’ll make for an interesting battle at the box office, and we do hope Cats has a few extra lives in store – it is Star Wars, after all.

The musical is also set to star Sir Ian McKellen and Jennifer Hudson, while Les Miserables‘ Tom Hooper will direct and Billy Elliot‘s Lee Hall will write the screenplay. Production is due to begin later this year.

There has been no confirmation on who will play who, though rumours suggest Hudson will take on the role of Grizabella, while McKellen may play Old Deuteronomy.

Meanwhile, its box office rival Star Wars recently began production, with director JJ Abrams sharing a tribute to late star Carrie Fisher in a Twitter announcement.

“Bittersweet starting this next chapter without Carrie, but thanks to an extraordinary cast and crew, we are ready to go,” he tweeted.

“Grateful for @rianjohnson and special thanks to George Lucas for creating this incredible world and beginning a story of which we are lucky to be a part. #IX”.

Cats and Star Wars: Episode IX will hit cinemas on December 20, 2019.
