Here's the Deal with 'Outer Banks' Season 2, for You, Person Who Is Obsessed

It happened to me: I watched the entirety of Netflix’s Outer Banks in one day. To be clear, this means I spent 10 full hours staring at my TV while a bunch of murderous, horny teens hunted for gold. But now that I’ve preemptively blown my Outer Banks wad, I have nothing to look forward to in my life other than cheese, the end of this pandemic, and—ah yes—Season 2. Here’s the deal with the second installment of this blessed mess.

Also, caution: there are spoilers below!

First, a Quick Recap of Season One

Outer Banks is about a group of friends known as the “Pogues” led by John B. Why his name isn’t just “John” remains a mystery to me, but IT’S JOHN B, OKAY? Anyway, turns out John B’s dad mysteriously disappeared while hunting for $400 million worth of gold that was lost at sea during a shipwreck. You’ve probably guessed what’s coming next: the Pogues end up finding the treasure while bodies pile up around them, and pretty much everyone is not who they seem. The show ends with John B getting falsely accused of murder, hopping on a boat with his girlfriend, and being chased into the eye of a storm by police. Not at all dramatic!

So, Is There Gonna Be a Second Season?

Netflix hasn’t confirmed as much, but almost definitely yes. For starters, Outer Banks is killing it. As of publication, it’s the #1 show on Netflix and shows no signs of slowing down. And while it didn’t end on a cliffhanger, the show did leave the door open for another adventure in the Bahamas as John B hunts for his stolen gold.

Here’s the thing, though: the world is currently locked down due to the coronavirus, which has kinda f*cked up filming schedules for a ton of projects. Assuming Netflix eventually grants Outer Banks a second season, the team likely won’t be able to begin filming until late 2020/early 2021, which means the new season won’t air until late 2021—or even early 2022. Please give me a moment while I:

The Good News? Season 2 Is Currently Being Written

Showrunner Jonas Pate told USA Today that he’s writing Season 2 while in quarantine, and that he envisions the show as a “four-season novel.” He also mentioned that Outer Banks will likely take place in the Bahamas: “There would be a couple episodes that take place, at least partially, in the Bahamas, it unfolds into a bigger mystery. We keep our old villains and we add some new ones. But it always comes back to the Outer Banks.”

The Cast Seems Ready

Like, ready to film in the Bahamas. Rudy Pankow (who plays JJ) told Star News Online, “I will freak out if we go to the Bahamas. I thought I was living the dream already, but going to the Bahamas would be the absolute peak.”

Meanwhile, Madelyn Cline (who plays John B’s girlfriend Sarah) spoke about character development next season, saying, “The first season only took place over a few days, so they are in this whirlwind romance brought together by a crazy adventure and a traumatic experience. What will it mean when the conflict of everything they are running from catches up to them?”

Kewl, But Where Will the Show Be Filmed?

If Season 2 takes place in the Bahamas, it stands to reason they’d shoot on location. But interesting fact: Season 1 did not take place in the actual Outer Banks because Netflix (rightfully) objected to the state’s House Bill 2—an anti-LGBT piece of legislation (also known as the “bathroom bill”) that drew ire in 2016. Instead, the show was filmed in Charleston, South Carolina, and chances are Season 2 will be, as well.

Cool, cool, cool, going to go concoct a plan to sneak on set.
