Kaya is living with Hayden's ex-fiance Wladimir Klitschko, 42, in his native Ukraine, and Hayden – who lives in Los Angeles – barely gets to see her.
Sources say that the former Nashville star "comes and goes" to Europe as she tries to visit her daughter as much as possible, however, it is a "challenging" situation.
Speaking to Us Weekly, the insider explained: "She really hasn't had much time with her daughter.
"She knows the child being with her is not best for [Kaya right now]. It's a sad situation.
"It's heartbreaking and challenging.
"They didn't spend the holidays together.
"It's disturbing, and she'll have to figure out how to manage this. It's not an easy scenario."
Last year, Hayden's mum, Lesley Vogel, revealed that the star "travels a great deal" in a bid to maintain some normalcy for the young girl.
Last month, Hayden opened up about co-parenting Kaya with her ex, insisting that their relationship is still "respectful".
Speaking at the Sharkwater Extinction premiere, the beauty said: "We're still respectful of each other, and we still have that friendship with each other.
"It's not a situation that you find yourself in all that often, so it’s a new one. But I think we’ve done a really good job."
Hayden also revealed that Kaya speaks "multiple languages", and often travels the world with her parents.
Hayden started dating then-world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir in 2009.
The pair split in 2011 before reconciling two years later, announcing their engagement in October 2013.
Hayden gave birth to Kaya in December 2014, and the couple confirmed their split in August last year.
