Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo offers biggest hint yet that the show will end soon

All good things must come to an end, and that even includes Grey’s Anatomy — despite the fact that we’re just days away from its record 15th season hitting screens in the US.

The medical drama that has somehow managed to keep chugging along as a ratings and critical powerhouse, in spite of numerous cast changes over nearly 15 years on the air. It survived losing Izzie, McDreamy, McSteamy and Cristina, probably because Ellen Pompeo has stuck around as Dr. Meredith Grey.

Yet, there continue to be questions about how much longer Pompeo wants to anchor the show. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, she gave an answer that might worry some fans when asked if she wanted to commit to the show beyond 2020.

“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell,” she admitted.

The actress then added: “It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change.”

When the day comes to wrap up Grey’s Anatomy, series creator Shonda Rhimes will return to pen the final episode — after previously turning over the showrunning duties to Krista Vernoff and William Harper to focus on her Netflix production deal.

“I have written the end of the show at least six times,” Rhimes recalled. “But we just don’t end. Every time I thought, ‘This is how the show should end,’ we’ve gone past those moments, so I’ve stopped trying. I have no idea now.”

For now, the series will return for its 15th season next week in the US, as Meredith gets involved with her most unexpected romantic hook-up of the series thus far.

Grey’s Anatomy’s record-breaking season 15 will air its super-sized, two-hour premiere episode on Thursday, September 27 in the US on ABC. The show airs on Sky Witness in the UK.
