Grey's Anatomy showrunner says Sarah Drew could return as April

Grey’s Anatomy controversially wrote out Dr April Kepner at the end of last season, but that doesn’t mean it’s the last you’ll have seen of the character.

April – played by Sarah Drew – was not killed off, and when asked about a possible return for the doctor, showrunner Krista Vernoff said the “doors are open”.

“Never say never,” Vernoff told TVLine. “That’s what I said when people asked me if I was coming back to Grey’s when I left season 7. I said, ‘Never say never’, and look.

“I’m not promising anything for this season. But at Shondaland, those doors are open.”

Vernoff’s comments come as she explained why she decided to say farewell to April as well as Dr Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw).

“Look, I came back in season 14. I had been gone since season 7. When I arrived, we had 14 series regulars,” she said. “That’s an unmanageable number of series regulars to write for. Nothing has time to land. It wasn’t manageable.

“So I made some complicated and difficult decisions last season, but still I’ve got 10 series regulars who have been there for a long time and that allows me to bring in some guest stars to play with those series regulars.

“The guest stars are often key to keeping things fresh and alive, giving people new energy. New characters to bounce off of.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC in the US, and on Sky Witness and NOW TV in the UK.
