Grandmother, 88, in tears as she says she hid ageist sacking by NHS from family

An 88-year-old grandmother was left in tears after revealing that she hid being sacked from the NHS from her family.

Eileen Jolly appeared on This Morning to talk about suing the NHS for age discrimination, revealing that she discovered nasty comments from colleagues who said that they would find her "dead on the floor".

Eileen had not taken a sick day in 10 years from her post at the Royal Berkshire Hospital but was sacked after failing to upload details of cancer patients who were waiting for non-urgent breast reconstruction surgery into a new data base.

Talking to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, she revealed that she loved her job as a medical secretary. Her title changed to patient pathway co-ordinator in 2015.

"I felt that I was doing a competent job," she said. "So I had no idea what was going to happen."

In 2016 she was suspended and later let go. "I was absolutely devastated – nothing had ever happened to me before."

Revealing that he died without knowing, Eileen teared up.

Her lawyers praised her for her courage in seeking justice over the sacking.

They said: "She’s been extraordinary, brave is the word that I would use."
