Losing a job is never easy, but finding out the news on Twitter seems like a pretty harsh (but very 21st century) way for it to happen.
Just ask Steve McNeill, co-creator of Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit, the video game-based panel show which aired on UKTV channel Dave.
On Thursday (September 27), the Dave Twitter account confirmed the series had been cancelled in response to a fan’s question.
“After three great series of Go8Bit we don’t have plans for any more – we’re hugely grateful to everyone who watched and enjoyed the show!” read the tweet.
News of the show’s cancellation was then retweeted by McNeill, who added: “If you’re wondering what telly’s like, this tweet just now is how I found out #Go8Bit’s definitely finished. Lovely stuff. Thanks to all u guys that watched.”
But to make things worse, McNeill then found a tweet from on-demand service UKTV Play two weeks ago announcing the show was over.
McNeill later added: “I knew it was very unlikely #Go8Bit was coming back, but the tweets were the first time I realised it was definitely over.
“The guys at @UKTV @davechannel have always been very supportive. By all means be sad #Go8Bit’s come to an end, but be nice. They’re nice. xxx.”
And showing that there really is no bad blood, the UKTV Twitter account later reached out to McNeill, writing: “We are genuinely incredibly sad about this. We love the show & are immensely proud of the three great series.
“We never say never but for now are basking in the warm glow of having made some great telly with you Steve.”
McNeill has since said he’s currently working with ESL UK managing director James Dean “on a bunch of new ways to bring you shows like Go 8 Bit and Go 8 Bit DLC online and on traditional broadcast platforms”.
