GMB’s Laura Tobin slammed for ‘fear-mongering’ with weather report

Global heatwave continues to break record temperatures

Some Good Morning Britain viewers accused the show of “fear-mongering” as it reported that an area in America has become the first in the world deemed “uninhabitable” without airconditioning due to increasing temperatures hitting the globe recently.

As weather reporter Laura Tobin gave a detailed report on the concerning trend, fans complained about the coverage, with Twitter user @ceidwadol sharing: “If I suffered from anxiety and saw the graphics of these maps I’d be scared to leave the house. Why they fear-mongering over the weather?” (sic)

“Before the media turned into scaremongering propaganda machines they would just tell us if you get too hot just find shade and drink water,” another added.

@xxpat19 asked: “Any good news about the weather Laura?”

@Brimox1 commented: “I lived in Dubai for the best part of 16 years. Every summer it hits 45C to 48C regularly with humidity above 50%. You just adapt and learn to cope with it.”

@Denzilmyson remarked: “Obsessed with records. Pathetic. More on this heatwave than our own country’s weather. Greta Tobin still insists we’re around average temperature when fact is we’re below average.”

However, others defended the coverage and highlighted the importance of discussing the climate crisis.

Responding to the complaints, @mancityneil wrote: “Because it’s real. If you can’t see that then God help you.”

@JulieBJewellery added: “#ClimateEmergency #ClimateExtinction this heating up of the land and sea kills many animals and crops what is UK doing to tackle this increasing issue @RishiSunak #NOTHING just lies and new drilling new mines ffs.”

During the forecast in question, Laura stood in front of a heat map and explained: “Heat is the main thing, so yesterday we were talking about if all of these areas of heat are connected, so I have a chart to show you what’s going on and why.

“First of all, we start off with the extreme heat across North America, the heat dome is out towards the west.

“Phoenix in Arizona has just broken a record, they have had 19 days where they have consecutively had temperatures above 43 Celsius, 110 Fahrenheit, and they’re one of the first cities in the world to become uninhabitable unless they have airconditioning – and many areas don’t.

“Now, this jetstream dips south across the Atlantic and then back across Europe and this is where we have the heat dome – that continues all the way around the world over towards Asia, where China continues to have record-breaking temperatures.

“But records were broken yesterday across Europe, Catalonia – their highest temperature ever recorded and Rome, Vatican City, again their highest temperature ever recorded.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
