While hosting Good Morning Britain Kate Garraway questioned the reasoning behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'Holiday card'.
Speaking about the new photograph released in time for Christmas, Kate asked if there was a hidden reason behind it, explaining that she wondered if the pair were trying to ‘usurp’ the Queen.
Earlier in the week the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who now reside in Los Angeles, shared the first photo of their family since they welcomed baby Lilibet.
The photo featured on the family's annual Christmas card, that they are dubbing their 'Holiday card' – in true American fashion.
Seven-month-old Lilibet and two-year-old Archie can be seen in the adorable snap, which left fans of the young family overjoyed – but with the card being released on the same day as the Queen's, Kate Garraway couldn't help but question the motive.
Presenting the show with Richard Bacon, he said: "They released their card half an hour before Buckingham Palace and the Queen did."
To which Kate said: "So is there a suggestion, Richard, that they kind of did that too – in some way – usurp the Queen?"
Richard then said: "It sounds ridiculous to me but that is obviously the suggestion.
"I think when you live on the west coast over there, you’re just the tiny bit not sure what time it is over here."
Then as the duo interviewed Royal correspondent Chris Ship, he stuck up for the young couple: "It had to be released at some point," he chimed. "The Queen’s picture was released at 10:30pm and that Harry and Meghan photo dropped into my inbox at around 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
"I don’t agree that it was done to usurp the Queen, no."
Harry and Meghan penned a sweet message in their 2021 card. Inside, the card said: "This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet, to the world. Archie made us a ‘Mama’ and a ‘Papa’, and Lili made us a family.
"As we look forward to 2022, we have made donations on your behalf to several organizations that honour and protect families – from those being relocated from Afghanistan to American families in need of parental leave."
