George RR Martin gives an update on Game of Thrones novels – and it might not be what you want to hear

The final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones might be inching closer, but the never-ending saga of A Song of Ice and Fire is many moons away from ending.

Which is both good news and bad news, we guess.

Giving fans a much-wanted update on his current writing schedule, Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin told Stephen Colbert that the wait for A Dream of Spring will be a long one.

While promoting his latest book, part one of Fire and Blood, George admitted that the next title on his list is currently undecided.

“First I have to finish Winds of Winter,” the author (unsurprisingly) admitted, before offering a non-committal “maybe” when asked whether Fire and Blood will be finished next.

“Maybe [it will be] A Dream of Spring, maybe more Dunk and Egg stories,” he mused. “There’s a lot of stuff to write.

“I should actually get home and get to work, I guess.”

Yes, George. Yes, you should.

In Martin’s defence, the author has acknowledged “a considerable weight” on his shoulders now that Game of Thrones is such a phenomenon.

Opening up about Winds of Winter – which has been a work-in-progress for seven years – George acknowledged that he was now “very conscious” of the writing process.

“The show has achieved such popularity around the world, the books have been so popular and so well reviewed, that every time I sit down I’m very conscious I have to do something great, and trying to do something great is a considerable weight to bear,” he said.

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in 2019. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
