The world of Game of Thrones has been carefully crafted through the run of the show. One of the things that felt pretty realistic is how long it took for characters to move through the world, but that changed in Season 7. This is the reason why and if that change will continue in Season 8.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones had a much faster pace that drew criticism
Fans noticed that characters were covering large distances much faster than they did before. This change was made pretty much without warning so there were many comments about it.
Polygon gave a few examples of this change with Jon Snow coming from far north only to meet Cersei in King’s Landing in just one episode. So why the big change?
A co-executive producer said they made the choice to change things
The change wasn’t just imagined by fans. It also wasn’t the result of some kind of oversight.

Bryan Cogman, co-executive producer of the show, talked about the change with Entertainment Weekly. “We made a choice to ‘just get on with it’ last season,” he said. “You can sit at home and do the math on how long it took to get the boats from Point A to Point B and whatever that was, yeah, that’s what it was. There’s always something everybody has got to graft on to and I guess that outrage was better than others, so I’ll take it.”
There was some backlash to the change since there were so many events that happened during the previous seasons on the long adventures. However, showrunner Dan Weiss said they haven’t really paid attention to it.
“We don’t read a lot of that stuff,” said Weiss. “If somebody says, ‘I don’t like the way you do this,’ I have no idea what percentage of the people watching that opinion actually represents. If that opinion happens to surface louder on the internet, I still have no idea — it could be 1 percent of people that

The good thing about changing the pacing of last season is that it gathered most of the Game of Thrones characters into one place quickly. That means there might not be a need for that in its final season.
Writer, Dave Hill told Entertainment Weekly that Season 8 won’t speed things up as much. He also defended last season with “We had a lot of time cuts the vast majority of viewers didn’t catch. We could have a [title card] on there saying ‘Three Weeks Later,’ but we did not. Sometimes when moving pieces around you’re going to cheat a little bit. [For season 8], we tried to keep more of the time logic rather than jet packs.”
In the end, the change was a practical way to get characters in place for the last season. It also looks like Season 8 won’t have the same problem.
