Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie admits no one knew why she wanted to play Brienne of Tarth

We cannot imagine anyone else playing Brienne of Tarth apart from Gwendoline Christie, so it comes as a surprise that none of the people around her imagined her as the warrior.

The actress has played the iconic character for the past six seasons of Game of Thrones, and has admitted that her friends did not understand why she took the role.

“The triumph of Brienne of Tarth was, [she says,] both professional and personal,” Christie told ES Magazine.

“I know how generic it sounds but it just was, in every sense of the word, incredible that that part should come along, made for me in a way that none of my friends would’ve identified for a second.

“They saw all of the fighting, the physicality, the fact that it was a character who was constantly being described as ugly. None of the people who knew me could understand why I would want to play that part.”

As well as her role in Game of Thrones, Christie is perhaps best known for playing Captain Phasma in the latest Star Wars trilogy.

Her character appeared to meet a fiery end in The Last Jedi, and the actress admitted she fears she will not return in she fears she will not return in Episode IX.

“In truth, I don’t know,” she said earlier this year. “And that scares and upsets me because I really want to see this character explored. I’m actually very invested in the character now.

“And that’s genuine. That’s not just chat. It has opened up a chain of stories and events in my mind about who Phasma is.”

The full interview appears in this week’s Fashion Edition of ES Magazine, Thursday 13th September 2018.
