Game of Thrones deaths: Who died in Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5?

Season eight of Game of Thrones has seen some big characters getting the chop during the Battle of Winterfell. Many more people died in episode five called The Bells during the Battle of King’s Landing, which probably had the highest body count of any instalment ever on the HBO fantasy series. Here’s a look at the characters who perished in the penultimate episode of the series.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5

Varys

Varys (played by Conleth Hill) was the first to die after it was revealed he betrayed Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and tried to reveal the truth about Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) parentage.

Daenerys executed him the Targaryen way with her dragon carrying out the sentence.

Jaime Lannister

Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) was essentially killed by Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek) as they fought around the foundations of King’s Landing.

Despite being mortally wounded, he still managed to find Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) out amid the destruction and they were killed in an avalanche as they tried to flee from the city through the labyrinthine passages beneath the castle.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8, EPISODE 5 RECAP

Cersei Lannister

Cersei and Jaime died in each other’s arms as they failed to escape from King’s Landing.

Their escape route had been blocked by rubble, rendering them trapped and the pair were swallowed in an avalanche.

Harry Strickland

The Commander of Golden Company Harry Strickland (Marc Rissmann) sadly didn’t make it after the Unsullied charged the army and obliterated them.

Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) was the one to do the deed as he took revenge on Harry, along with any of Cersei’s other allies.

Euron Greyjoy

Euron was killed by Jaime in a bloody battle as the two men fought barehanded after losing their swords.

The grapple was fierce and desperate as the equally-matched men tried to overcome the over.

In the end, Jaime impaled Euron against a rock but the head of the Iron Fleet was still pleased with himself.

“I’m the man who killed Jaime Lannister,” Euron smirked through blood as he took his dying breath.

Qyburn

Maester Qyburn (Anton Lesser) did not make it out of King’s Landing either.

He was tossed to one side by The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) and smashed his head against a rock.

The Mountain killed Qyburn, who commanded him to protect Cersei. Instead, The Moutain fought against his younger brother The Hound (Rory McCann).

The Mountain & The Hound

In a scene that played out like something from the Terminator franchise, Cleganebowl finally happened as The Mountain and The Hound fought each other.

Their fight was brutal and bloody as a zombified The Mountain continued to rise every time The Hound stuck him with the pointy end.

There were echoes of the death of Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) as The Mountain tried to gouge out his sibling’s eyes but was less successful.

In the end, The Hound realised the only way to kill his brother was to take both of them out by launching them through the side of the burning Red Keep and falling to their deaths.

Nora

King’s Landing resident Nora (Laura Elphinstone) sadly perished amid the destruction of King’s Landing as Dany went on her dragon rampage.

Fans of Line of Duty are likely to recognise Nora as none other than Michelle Brandyce, who was told by Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) to “stop being a t*t and p*** off”.

Nora was a heroic figure as she tried to help Arya but sadly the Stark could not return the favour as the dragon fire swallowed the woman and her child whole.
