Gail Porter cries as she wears a wig on Loose Women for the first time since alopecia diagnosis 13 years ago

The television presenter famously developed the hair loss condition and refused to wear wigs in order to raise awareness of it and on today's Loose Women debuted her new look.

An emotional Gail wiped her eyes as she said: “I said, ‘I’m definitely not going to cry because I’ve got good make-up on!’ It feels really nice, but really weird. I keep wanting to do this [flicks hair] all the time.”

She added: “I gasped when I saw it.

“It reminds me of being young. I feel quite young today.”

Of choosing a blonde wig, she said: “It was kind of just, I wasn’t really entirely sure, I was thinking maybe pink, maybe something different. When I saw this colour it reminded me of being in the ‘90s and I thought, I quite like that. It was fitted for me.

“I was going to wear it in plaits, I wasn’t sure. I don’t know what to do. This is the first time I’ve had it on. I can take it off and be bald. I love being bald, I’m so used to it. But I wanted to show other people you can get things as real as this.”

Asked if she felt pressure to stay bald to inspire others, Gail said: “I think I’ll always be bald half the week. I don’t know when I’ll wear this. Maybe go out for dinner or something. I enjoy feeling bald, I understand what you’re saying, I want people to be aware you have a choice. It’s beginning to feel normal now. It’s so secure on my head, it’s been fitted for me.”

She previously appeared on the show to share the process of having a human hair wig made.

Explaining her change of heart, she said in June: "The thing is, I'm not gonna wear one full-time, I just got given the option."

Gail also said she will choose party wigs over more natural styles, adding: "I quite like pink or maybe grey with lilac."

When panellist Ruth Langsford described Gail as somewhat of a "poster girl for alopecia", with many sufferers admiring her decision to remain bold, the ex model said: "I can show other women you can wear it like a hat.

"I'm also looking forward to the fact that I can go out for a drink one night and to shock people who don't know me, just take it off during the night."

Gail also revealed her daughter Honey begged her not to wear her new wig all the time, with the Scottish star having been bald since her now-16-year-old was two.

"When I told her I was going to get a wig and she said, 'Not all the time?'"

Gail also had a wig maker take her measurements during the show, with the star set to return in six weeks to show off the finished product.

She added: "They're measuring me up and I'm going to choose the colour. I'm liking the idea of really long hair."

Elsewhere in the interview Gail – who revealed she was declared bankrupt during her appearance on the show last year – also shared the happy news that she is once again financially stable.

Asked how she was doing, she said: "I'm no longer bankrupt. Things just caught up with me and it's London life and I had bills and everything but I've managed to get myself together.

"I've got some work and I've just finished my book, which was cathartic."
